"Britain has a long history of piracy going back to Elizabeth 1st (at least)."

That'll be England you'll be talking about, Dr Campbell. Ireland was busy being pirated around that time and Scotland a little later.

More seriously, we were all at it. The Portuguese, the Spanish, the French, the Dutch ... can't think of anyone who wasn't.

Had it not been for one factor we'd have just been one among many. That factor was key. For at least a couple of decades Britain was the only country that could do mass production of industrial goods. We had a monopoly.

It was seriously fraying round the edges, that monopoly, by the time of the Great Exhibition. By 1880 it was well and truly gone. The US and Germany were even then outproducing us and plenty of others coming up on the rails. Nevertheless, that head start was what we lived off for a century and more. Maybe up until WWII.

So we don't go pirating any more. With the best will in the world you can't do a lot of that with 30-odd tanks operational and the once awesome Royal Navy down to a few boats. We scrounge around for the scraps falling off the big boys' table.

Sic transit and a damned good thing too. Living off looting is getting to be so yesterday. So too for Europe as a whole. Time we all passed on that and got down to living off our own. We could, so easily, if we stopped living on old dead fantasies.

That was amazing - so grateful that you shared that with us. It was an education really. You are right, it was England rather than Britain. Can I ask, when you say 'living off our own' you mean what Russian is doing - becoming self sufficient?

I believe Scotland could, Dr Campbell. One of a very small and select group of European countries that could fuel and feed itself. Trickier for England but doable?

Ensuring an adequate defence is the problem. But since we don't have one at the moment we'd be no worse off.

In among the multitude of facts in your truly invaluable weekly summary I always pause at the cats. We got adopted by a couple several years ago. Wild. They turned up with their mother several years ago and decided to give us a try. The mother pushed off a little later - too many people around - but so far her kittens seem satisfied with the board and lodging. It's the devil's own job worming them. We've tried pulverising the tablets and artfully mixing them in with food. "Who do you think you're fooling," they say scornfully so we have to throw the food away and give them new. In that and all other respects they've let us know they own the place and we're only here on sufferance.

I have deleted ‘Britain’ and inserted ‘England’.

I know what you mean about tablets and cats: always a nightmare. We have a pointer dog now and he gobbles them up without hesitation.

Yes, at the beginning of he period 1870-1913, the UK was the world leader in iron and steel production and technology. At the end of that period, the UK had become a third rate iron and steel producer, having been overtaken in this respect by Germany and the USA. Likewise, in that same period, coal output in the UK fell below that of the USA and Germany by 1900.

I think it's worth noting that Karoline Leavitt has a young son, born in the summer of 2024. Given her role in the delivery of the don's terror messaging, she should spend time looking at the images you refer to in the early section of your support. She might develope some human empathy ...

Also I think you are being too kind to Lammy; apart from coming across as a moron or ignoranus he seems like a moral coward. I watched the Krainer interview at Dialogue works via the link. It may be the case that the tall orange fella with the elaborate comb-over is fighting one part of the finacial elite, however he's not doing it for anyone else or to any prepared plan. I agree with the two words Michael Hudson uses to describe him.

Thank you again for your work.

Thanks Dude - It is quite an ordeal just going through that Palestinian channel at the moment. Imagine what it must be like to be there. The more I hear from these people, the more I admire them. I'll try to be harder on Lammy in future but just short of being abusive. What words did Michael Hudson use to describe Trump?

He considers the don to be both a crook and a moron. I had hoped that wouldn't have compromised him to the extent that it has. After all being a crook seems like it is just par for the course when it comes to US president. Much like being a Roman governor in times past, who became significantly richer as a consequence of their postings.

I’d like to express my heartfelt condolences on the loss of the cat you lovingly cared for.

I'm sure she felt happy and loved traveling with you in the campervan.

Thanks for that Kumi. It was a long time ago: more than ten years.

Thanks for compiling the update Rob.

It looks like a lot of stuff is in the hands of politicians now. So what could go wrong?

I saw that Boris Johnson has crawled out of the woodwork with his recognition of nazi elements in Ukraine.

Starmer and the top Euros are definitely still in the Ukraine worshipping cult.

Re: Mark Carney, if he is elected to lead Canada, it’s over. Canada needs fiscal responsibility and to avert its sinking to third world status.

Canadians, in their never ending ignorance, are likely to elect him, in my view.

I thought it was a done deal according to reports. But some reports get ahead of themselves. What do you mean by 'fiscal responsibility' in this connection? I am intrigued: please expand.

He’s PM but has to call an election.

Canada took out all the slack in its financial system through Covid. Now we’ve got an uncompetitive business climate, regressive taxation and a federal government that favors some provinces over others, while refusing to use its tremendous natural resources to generate wealth and security for its citizens. Rampant gang/cartel activities, compromised border security, rampant crime and a drastically declining standard of living. Installing another international banker type won’t help any of this, and in fact, will accelerate the decline.

I agree with all of that. I watched Canada a lot during the Covid things and the inspirational 'trucker' revolt. So he is the PM - for now. Does he have serious opposition of a non-globalist variety? Anyway - you are right, as i said in the Update - policies identical to Trudeau. They are both Deep State puppets - are they not?

Occam's avatar

Carney is even worse. He's more mature and not the preening, virtue-signaling poppinjay that JT is, but he's definitely more of a globalist and he's seriously connected.

Not sure if you saw it, but the government just appealed the sentence of one of the Trucker Protest leaders. They want longer. Reeks of J6 persecution.
