Many thanks Rob for enlighten us that the bold and canny resistance against the evil colonial warmongering U$rael is still alive and kicking asses!

Iran has been and is an anti-colonial champion, though with some flaws, that has stood up against the racist, apartheid, zionist statelet of Israel supported by the crooked Epstein-gangsters and banksters in US and elsewhere.

For your esteemed and awaited effort to bring us hope, I hereby dub you to Sir Busker!

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

I love it Freddy: the humble Busker dubbed a Knight - thank you.

I think that your humble words, though strong ones, are mightier than swords and tomahawks and awards you to be a true noble Knight, Sir Busker!

Excellent report - let's hope that Iran prevails.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

Thanks John - I think Iran will prevail. I imagine that if it is ever on the brink then Russia and China will get involved more deeply. Neither can afford to lose Iran.

On wording (ii) - attack.

The English language, like any other, has a rich vocabulary. But now it seems "attack" is the most popular term, almost the only one. And by translating from English many other languages use the corresponding foreign word, even when it last was used during the Napoleonic wars or for infantry charges in WWI.

Etymology. Attack comes via French, back to Latin ad-tangere with a participle ad-tactum. Lat. tangere meaning to touch, herefrom (via Spanish) the dance tango and the geometric tangent. So attack is the move to come into contact. Whereas con-tact is the situation whilst being in contact. Tact in musics is the rhythmic touching of an instrument. Hence, attack is a term for an assault → charge of cavalry or infantry to bridge the distance towards close combat. Arrow salvos or salvos by infantry of the line aren't attacks. Skirmish is fighting in the short distance but not yet close shielding and covering the main force.

The ongoing war is a distant war. With stand-off weapons only. The initial strike could be called strike package or onslaught - not an attack. Iran is shooting at the ships, striking, bombing or shelling (arty only) them. I am not sure how to name a strike with a uncrewed boat. May be by remembering antic naval warfare ramming or running down?

Bombing comes like the Greek and Latin name of the bumblebee from the sound of an incoming stone/ammunition. First from a trebuchet, then from mortars, finally from a plane, In modern use bombing would indicate a plane being above, whereas modern glide bombs return the term into distant warfare.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

I get your point BG - thanks. Attack is also used for things like 'heart attack' or 'verbal attack' - so it is misused all over the place, according to your assessment. But language is polysemous and it evolves. I studied the sociology and philosophy of language as an undergraduate and nothing highlights the evolution of language more than Raymond William's 'Keywords'. Have you read it?

BG13's avatar

sure, i just didn't repeat this from the first comment. Language use rules. Once a majority speaks "wrongly" it becomes "right". Otherwise all the languages would sound the same - at least those that "recently" originated from one source, like the Indo-European ones.

My point isn't "wrong use" - my point is more not to use "poor in vocabulary" language. No, I don't know this book.

Perry Simms's avatar

Thanks for informing us!

PFC Billy's avatar

Thanks for that exposition on “attack” and the correctness of contemporary usage.

Comment was erudite, historically relevant, technically correct- And has 0 chance of affecting popular usage.

Do you cast such pearls before swine regularly? Perhaps a book is in order…

BG13's avatar

thanks for reading :D No, my point wasn't correctness of temporary use. Languages changes all the time and understanding of words too. I just wanted to point out poor use in vocabulary. Orwellian like. Once the vocabulary is thinned out you can't express nuances anymore. Some thoughts may be impossible altogether.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

I understand your point BG. I am familiar with the political use of language and the fact that language shapes our reality. Cheers.

Thanks Rob for documenting this mess, I’m very worried about the economic impact, so far normies in the us are unaware.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

Cheers Ray - it is a mess.

Bread and Circuses's avatar

Normies in the EU too seem to think that fuel costs rising due the Hormuz being shut is 'a conspiracy theory' , i commented on few (non english language) forums about the fuel prices that will soon rise and have already risen in many countries, and i was immediately called 'a corspiracy theorist' 'idiot' 'Putin's best friend' 'Kremlin agent' etc etc by a large crowd of angry commenters. The MSM brainwashing really has rooted deep here.

Well i'll just wait and i archived that date's fuel prices, and i'll just post that in about a month with current prices and we'll see what they say then and who was right.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

That's amazing Bread, but so sad. I live in a small Hamlet of ten terraced cottages and I bet all of the people here would be freaked out if they knew about the me and the Busker. They would definitely call ne a conspiracy theorist, Kremlin agent etc.

On wording, absolutely no critics, just a question or discussion.

Iran war sounds like a war that happens in Iran and nowhere else. Somehow these Iranian make a war, or the war broke out in Iran just so. Wars are usually named after the region where they happened - Vietnam war, Korea war, omitting the other party to the war and much of the prologue of Jeju massacres, fascist behavior and provocative incursions, happily starting with North Korea "unprovoked" attacked the peaceful and democratic South Korea. And in the case of Vietnam omitting that Laos and Cambodia also got a share of bombs. One could, by default, assume the unnamed party are the US. Going slightly back we have e.g. the Crimean war with a side episode in Kamchatka, without the US. The war happens in large parts of West Asia, especially in Israel, Lebanon. West Asia war of 2026?

Many wars are named including both warring sides German-French war of 1870, German-Danish war of 1864. These are usually limited to 2 parties. US-Israel-Iran war sounds a bit clumsy.

War on Iran seems to fit for the initial phase. But now it much more looks like a war on Israel and the US presence in West Asia.

So far I haven't seen the wording of "unprovoked war of aggression", "full scale attack", "treacherous attack" or the like in MSM, the marching order obviously differs from the UA-RUS war.

War on Iran. The US is at war with Iran. The US is at war against Iran. There is a war between the US and Iran. In my understanding all of the above are normal expressions in English - please correct me if I'm wrong. In most languages I use, analog phrases as "war with", "war against", and "war between" are possible. I personally prefer "against" and would use "with" more in sportsmanlike situations like in a duel or a sports match, not exactly in a war.

I'd probably prefer the Iranian name "Ramadan war", but ofc usage is already established and once a majority use a certain wording this one is becoming the "right one"

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

You make some brilliant points BG but I will stick with Iran War for the time being.

Everything since at least 2014 has been various fronts & theaters of WWIII in my opinion. But I'm not anyone who's opinion matters...

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

He may have used one in the war. I'll edit to include Dragunov.

PFC Billy's avatar

@Dr. Rob Campbell

I looked into this further, Iran has produced a cloned copy of the Dragunov called Nakhjir 3. Khameini did carry a designated marksman weapon during the 1980s. (When was the last time a US president carried an infantry rifle on an active front?)

Via Wikipedia:

"Iran utilizes the SVD Dragunov as a standard squad support and marksman weapon, primarily through its domestically produced clone, the Nakhjir 3. The rifle has been in use since the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) and remains a staple for both the regular Iranian military (Artesh) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)."

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

Cheers Billy - I considered other images to lead the Iran Weekly Summary but the new leader with a rifle said all I wanted to say. This is a real tough guy unlike Trump, Hegseth and Rubio.

PFC Billy's avatar

It was refreshing to see a cleric brandishing something besides an AK variant- Persians DO have a reputation for more sophisticated tastes than some others in the region, whose grandfathers seem to have been illiterate tribals or religiously insane Wahabi camel jockeys.

Thanks Rob. Great to have everything summed up in one article. Keep them coming.

I don't know who the chest thumping US announcements are intended for, perhaps the US voters, as the Iranians don't seem to care about words.

Its humiliating when the big announcements like "we have destroyed the Iranian Navy" and "we have total air dominance" yet ships are still sunk by fast boats and they are still talking about destroying mine layers. Also the Reapers and now KC135s are falling from the sky.

It sort of starts to move from propaganda to stupidity. Then of course the attempt to censor any coverage of damage in Israel and US bases. In today's world of online journalists and OSINT imaging it really doesn't work.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

Thanks Steve - I think lots of the propaganda is stupid and therefore counter-productive. Staements such a 'Khamenei drinking American blood from a shoe, Iranians chopping babies heads off and cutting women in half will convince only the very stupid and ignorant (which do exist).

Deplorable Dave's avatar

As an American, the only good outcome of this war is demonstrating to the DoD how impotent their forces have become. So why did we even start this? Israel can certainly protect itself. WTF?

Palle's avatar

Sue-side drone?

What is that?

An Automaton?

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

Mahmood and others call it a suicide drone but it is an unmanned boat or sea drone - which are used regularly by the Ukrainians on the Black Sea. But it is guided rather than automatic. It may even be a First Person View (FPV) drone - so the operator can see where its going.

PFC Billy's avatar

No, part of Sue's bag pipes.

Wow Rob, there is so much happen going it is hard to absorb it all. Thanks for this separate report.

Iran's new supreme leader has made a public statement here are the main points:

• Learned about becoming the new Leader via state TV, like everyone else.

• Taking the seat of his father & Ayatollah Khomeini is a "very difficult task."

• Confirms Iran is in an active, "oppressed" struggle against the "Front of Arrogance" (the US and allies).

• Calls the Strait of Hormuz closure a primary lever. Hints at opening new, unconventional fronts where the enemy is vulnerable.

• Praised Yemen, Hezbollah, and Iraqi groups for their support.

• Said he has lost his wife, sister, niece/nephew, and brother-in-law, alongside his father.

• Vowed that revenge will be sought for every citizen killed, not just his father. Specifically highlights a "deliberate crime" committed by the enemy at the Shajareh Tayyibah School in Minab, which killed 175 schoolgirls.

• Iran will seek compensation from the enemy’s assets (or destroy them to an equal value) if they refuse to pay for damages.

• Issued a warning to the 15 countries that border Iran: close any foreign military bases used to attack Iran immediately.

• Iran has already struck US bases and will continue to do so if they remain active, though he highlights the need for "warm relations" with neighbors.

• Ordered free medical care for the wounded & state-funded compensation for private property damage, requiring officials to report directly to him on their progress.

From Mojtaba Khamenei's official Telegram channel.

The strike on Oman was not Iranian. It came from the US 5th fleet,

Given the sly behaviour of Modi, the 'I' in BRICS could well come to stand for Iran, not India.

Apart from the US' desire to become Gatekeeper of the world's oil, the other major reasons for staring this war were about trade: Negating BRICS, the BRI, and the North South corridor that Russia is developing through Iran to have a direct route to India.

Sadly, 4 million people have already been displaced: 3.2 million in Iran and 800,000 in Lebanon, according to our ABC News.

Israel is in denial about deaths in their nation, but we are seeing footage of full body bags being heaped into trucks, rather than ambulances. Those two Fatah 2 missiles appear to have taken a heavy toll. Iran is now enacting the Gazification of Israel. It is high time the Zionist Project was ended. It has been a failure of humanity.

Dr. Rob Campbell's avatar

I cover much of what you have said about Mojtaba's speech but thanks for putting some meat on the bones. I can't include everything because it is too long (34 minutes) and takes up too much of my time. I have to figure out a way to make it shorter in future. I'm not sure what you mean by: 'The strike on Oman was not Iranian. It came from the US 5th fleet'. There have been lots of strikes on Oman but are you saying that the US 5th fleet attacked Iran - interesting if true. Interesting stuff Joy - thanks.

Joy Ringrose's avatar

Yes Rob. I should have said the latest strike, but you are right there have been several strikes on Oman from the same entity, "Viktor Bondarev confirmed that the missiles and drones that targeted Saudi Arabia and Oman were launched from the United States Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf, near international waters adjacent to Iran, in an attempt to disguise the operation and blame Tehran."

Anthony - I wasn't able to post the following: Thanks Anthony - If you read the Iran Update it will give you a sense of who is winning this war and how many different resistance groups are involved. I haven’t seen anything about the Ukrainian Zaporozhye offensive but there appears to have been a Russian breakthrough around Orikhiv - which I reference in the Update. I’m not saying there hasn’t been a Ukrainian offensive here: only that I haven’t seen it reported.
